Back from desert in the greenness of Jökuldalur.
A miniature church in Eiríksstaðir
And a corresponding cemetery.
The river cut canyon ...
... and exposed columnar basalt.
The Stuðlagil Canyon gained a lot of tourist attention only during the last few years.
But to get in to the canyon one has to cross the river in Klaustursel.
And hike for several kilometers over terraces back to the canyon.
In the canyon ...
It was one of the most impressive things in Iceland I saw during this trip.
The most spectacular part.
Some of them are hexagonal and some pentagonal.
Abrupt change in column direction from vertical to horizontal.
...
The happy little tourist.
Even birds found a nesting place there.
Stuðlafoss halfway between the canyon and the starting point.
Time for some fieldwork again. This time in the northeast. Borgarjfjörur valley.
Gravel road to Vopnafjörður.
Passing a radio station in a way to Svartfell.
You almost can't call that a road.
A permafrost borehole nearby.
A plenty of patterned ground around.
With nicely developed secondary circles inside.
The patterned ground on the road shows how quickly it is formed again after being destroyed by road construction.
On a way down south to another borehole through a real forest. One of the very few in Iceland.
Icelandic Loch Ness - Lagarfljót. It measures 60 km in length and indeed people started seeing a worm in it.
Waking up in a sunny morning close to ...
... Snæfell, which just revealed its glaciers before they were again envailed by clouds.
Only 2 km long hike to Sauðafell to visit another borehole.
The borehole on a flat top.
Rain and sun equals rainbow.
Interesting cloud formation at the edge between plateau and valley.
Ice wedges (or sand wedges?) also there.
Polygons ...
Verde que te quiero verde.
Back in the north to visit Gagnheiði. Five km hike after the road was closed.
More flat kind of mountains.
The borehole.
Another radio station on the top.
That we used to hide from quite harsh wind at the top.
Gagnheiði after the fog lifted for a few seconds.
Egilsstaðir
A piece of Slovenia at Egilsstaðir camping site.
More sightseeing followed the work.
Mjóifjörður is one of the least inhabited places in the Eastfjords.
Water cascades on on basalt layers and pointy mountains.
A shipwreck in the fjord.
The wreck and a cirque.
A small settlement Brekka.
Hostel and camping place.
The village.
Corrugated iron was introduced to icelandic architecture in 1860's and is due to the lack of timber the most common building material still today.
Less appealing old building coated in same material.
This house was probably from before the "iron age" on Iceland.
Mountains in Reyðarfjörður an a way down south along the Eastfjords.
Horses in Fáskrúðsfjörður.
Fáskrúðsfjörður
More pointy mountains in surroundings of Stöðvarfjörður.
Stöðvarfjörður town.
Jökultindur at the end of the valley.
Whimbrel was one of the birds that we saw the most often (Numenius phaeopus).
A dyke cutting this mountain in half.
Blábjörg Cliff in Berufjörður draws attention with its blue-green colour.
It is an outcrop of sedimented volcanic ash also known as tuff.
Having a "closer look" at the cliff.
And another one.
»You monkey, do you really have to climb everywhere?«
Somebody came all the way from Asia.
Some of the mountains in Berufjörður are remnants of volcano plugs. Stöng Mountain is standing out from the surroungs because the hardened magma is more resistant to weathering.
Smátindur is another volcanic neck.
Could be a remnant of a large landslide or just a cirque?
Time for lunch at a dyke.
Lava filled up a vertical crack, and is now more resistant to weathering and is sticking out.
Thymus (Thymus vulgaris) or "dušina maternica" in Slovene could be seen on many parts of Iceland.
Coast along Þjóðvegur reveals more tuff rocks.
The coast turns steeper again after entering active volcanic areas.
...
A landslide of loose slope deposits.
Horizontal rock layers are replaced by more chaotic stratigraphies.
A barrier island at Hvalnes
Spectacular Tófuhorn.
Ejga lublančana, kr sm se je prpelu.
Braided river is indicating that we are returning back to glaciated areas.
A photo of Vestur-Horn before finally returning back to Vatnajökull.
